Charging problems

I've been having a few problems with my charging system recently. The battery runs down especially when the lights are on so I ran a few tests.

The alternator appears to be putting out a good 90v ac charge at 5000rpm as it should but it doesn't seem to be making it into the battery. Voltage drops to around 10v at higher rpm. I did a couple of tests on the new rec/reg and to my (electrically) inexperienced eye it seemed as the this was at fault.

On the advice of a very pleasant and helpful chap at Electrex World from whence I bought the reg/rec after my old one fried itself, I packed the new one up and sent it off to them the day before yesterday. It arrived back with me this morning - very speedy service! They'd tested it and found it to be functioning correctly so they very kindly sent me a list of instructions for testing the rest of the charging system.

So now I need to fit it back on the bike and work my way through the tests they sent me.

I'll keep you posted and put some pics up of the tests in progress.

Re: Charging problems

Good to hear there are still some copmanies around that value their customers and are willing to help (testing it AND giving you instructions emoticon

make sure you check EVERY connection between alternator, rec reg and battery, sometimes a connection will be fine and all your tests will have 100% results during tests but then after you go over a bump or a certian rpm, a connection may wiggle out or just not make a strong contact. CRC 556 always helps :P

good luck gary

Erm, I'm afraid you've lost me there emoticon

Just waiting for a battery charger to arrive as the battery is pretty flat at the moment. I ordered an Accumate online the day before yesterday so as soon as it arrives I'll charge the battery and do the rest of the tests.

I think crc56 is some sort of water repeller such as wd40.

Yeah thats it

556 is just the fancier (probably just marketing crap) version of wd40

its a water repellent, lubricant, penetrater, rust converter etc

great to spray into electrical connections that are giving a bit of grief

any good have you sorted it ive had a similar prob and it was a dodgy connection to the reg whilst doing a wiggle test whilst running could watch the voltage drop but could also be a duff battery is it holding charge ok.

Still not sorted Oli. New battery a short while back, new regulator just before that.
I've run all the tests that Elextrex world sent me and still can find nothing conclusive. The alternator seems to be ok. I disconnected it from the reg/rec, loaded it with a headlight bulb and ran it. It puts out a good voltage with all the phases being within half a volt of each other. I'm coming round to the idea that Mick suggested - that it's a fault in the wiring loom somewhere.

Shan't get a chance to look at it for a couple of days as I'm a bit busy till Thursday. I'll keep you posted though.

Re: Charging problems

Hi Gary,
i had a similar problem, the battery wasn't charging properly, at one point i turned on the headlights and the thing would stall, but would run (if a bit ragged) with the lights off. my fault was a very corroded connection on the large block connector (located under the seat) which is connected to the Reg/Rec. cleaned the culprit, resoldered the pin and of corse sealed the joint with heatshrink, and bobs ya uncle fannys ya aunt.....she breathes again!
may be worth a check....

good luck

Jonah

I know just the block you mean Jonah! In fact because I've replaced the reg/rec I've had a look at that connector and it's OK. It could easily be one of the others I haven't yet looked at though. I shall try and get back onto it later in the week.
